UNCCD COP17 Bureau Holds First Meeting in Ulaanbaatar
The Bureau of UNCCD COP17 held its first meeting on August 18 to review conference organization, consensus-building and implementation priorities. Vice presidents represented Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, the Cook Islands, Brazil, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, France and Switzerland. Participants received updates from the Committee of the Whole, the Committee on Science and Technology and the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention. Discussions covered land degradation, drought, scientific and technical work and future cooperation. Mongolia, as presiding country, emphasized equal participation, inclusive decision-making and results that parties can implement after the conference.

The Bureau of the seventeenth Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification met for the first time on August 18 in Ulaanbaatar. The meeting considered conference management, the search for consensus and cooperation beyond the current session.

Mongolia said its presidency would promote equal participation and open, inclusive and consensus-based decisions focused on practical results.
