The Bureau of the seventeenth Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification met for the first time on August 18 in Ulaanbaatar. The meeting considered conference management, the search for consensus and cooperation beyond the current session.

Vice presidents at the meeting represented Côte d'Ivoire, Cameroon, the Cook Islands, Brazil, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, France and Switzerland. The Bureau heard updates from the Committee of the Whole, the Committee on Science and Technology and the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention. Land degradation, drought, scientific and technical questions and future collaboration were among the subjects discussed. Mongolia said its presidency would promote equal participation and open, inclusive and consensus-based decisions focused on practical results.
