Ulaanbaatar opened the first 110 green housing units at the Sharkhad sub-center. They are part of 338 units currently planned there under a program supported by the Asian Development Bank and Green Climate Fund.

The buildings are estimated to reduce household energy use by 25 percent, water use by 20–25 percent and embodied energy in materials by 20–25 percent compared with conventional buildings. The broader program targets 4,200 units at Sharkhad and Bayankhoshuu, plus 120,000 square meters of green space, bicycle lanes, pedestrian paths and parking. Ten percent of units are reserved for people with disabilities. The savings are project estimates and require operating data after occupancy.
